Tolbiac Chevaleret

Tolbiac Chevaleret is critical for the Paris Rive Gauche redevelopment area to complete the stitching of the 13th District with the National Library neighborhood and the Seine River.  Decking intricate railroad tracks, a significant grade change to connect neighborhoods, and an imposing warehouse of historic significance to be potentially preserved where the key issues to meet this challenge. Our concept “Beyond the Bridges” organizes the site as series of bridges spanning the railways between the Avenue de France and the old fabric south. Two plazas, a central garden, office buildings interspersed with public ways provide many opportunities for connection as well as offering a sound structural and phasing strategy. As part of the plan sustainability the historic is fully preserved and reused as a mixed-use “ground scraper” including a greenhouse engaging the park, tropical indoor garden, and artist lofts. The grade change is absorbed at the seam of the tracks with a multilevel promenade offering a unique character and discovery.
